The present study systematically replicated Perez et al. (2019) aiming to evaluating the sensibility of the IRAP while capturing the derived transformation of stimulus function using a “minimal training” – that is, a relational training with a low mastery criterion, in the absence of derivation tests. The participants went through a training phase to establish relations of coordination (or equivalence) between facial expressions (A1 [fear]; A2 [happiness]) and nonsense symbols (B1, B2, C1 and C2). AB (A1B1 and A2B2) relations were taught first, followed by BC (B1C1 and B2C2) relations. The programmed mastery criterion for each training step was 12 consecutive correct responses. Later, the transformation of stimulus function (or meaning) was assessed for C1 (=fear) and C2 (=happiness) using the IRAP. Results suggest that C stimuli (C1 and C2) had their function transformed based on the arbitrary relational training. Thus, the IRAP captured the derived transformation of stimulus function even when the participants were exposed to a relational training with just a few trials and in the absence of the traditional tests for the emergence of novel relations or derivation tests.
