Abstract

The present study aims to conduct a systematic review of scientific articles published in the last 10 years that have investigated how superstitious practices can influence individuals’ adherence to healthcare treatments. The concepts of superstitious behavior and superstition proposed by the field of Behavior Analysis were used. The articles were selected from the PubMed, Biblioteca Virtual em Saúde (BVS) and Portal de Periódicos da Capes databases. Research on different types of disease, in different countries, was analyzed in order to understand how superstitious practices can influence the behavior of patients, caregivers, family members, healthcare professionals and providers of unconventional treatments. As main results, it is possible to affirm that adherence to a healthcare treatment can be influenced by superstitious practices; medical treatments can be replaced by alternative treatments when superstitious learning occurs; and the search for alternative healthcare practices, because they are regionally acessible, tend to establish themselves in the absence of qualified healthcare services.
