Abstract

Masculinities are plural phenomena that are socially constructed. In order for them to be fully analyzed, we need to examine the relationships established between their different configurations. Hegemonic masculinity, for example, is one that occupies a place of domination and is established through unequal relationships with other models of masculinity, especially subordinate masculinity. Studies have shown that this dominant model can be related to harmful male behaviors, whether in relation to women or in relation to other men who occupy a lower place in the hierarchy of masculinities. Behavior Analysis (BA) can contribute to the elaboration of strategies to modify this problem, since it has demonstrated efficiency in the management of socially relevant phenomena. Thus, we aimed to examine masculinities based on the radical behaviorist theory, as well as to make some reflections on the clinical practice of behavior analysts in the care of men and its competence in the transformation of potentially harmful masculinity practices. Masculinities can be considered cultural practices and should be considered in the construction of functional analyses, making them more complete and contributing to the prediction and control of the behaviors affected by such practices. Furthermore, psychotherapeutic intervention can also be an instrument of cultural change, promoting less harmful masculinity practices.
