Abstract

Functional analytic psychotherapy (FAP) has features that make it difficult to work with clients who do not belong to the same culture as the therapist, as well as features that make this work easier. After briefly considering some trends in the literature regarding culture sensitive and culturally responsive psychotherapy, features of FAP are discussed that are apt to favor culturally competent treatment. Finally, suggestions are offered for optimizing the use of these features to make therapy more culturally responsive. These involve (1) using the client’s points of view and resources, (2) a focus on the immediate resolution of problems that occur in the therapeutic relationship, (3) and the intensification of therapist self-observation and diverse experiences. Seen through the lens of FAP, instead of being a problem, cultural differences can become allies of the treatment process.
