Abstract

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) aims to promote psychological flexibility through experiential and values-based clinical processes. This qualitative and exploratory cross-sectional study investigated the perceptions of Brazilian clinical psychologists practicing ACT regarding adherence and therapeutic competence. A total of 27 therapists from different regions of the country participated, aged between 25 and 53 years, mostly women, with more than five years of professional experience. Data collection was conducted through Online Focus Groups (OFGs), utilizing a semi-structured script, and the data were using a thematic analysis. Participants reported identification with ACT principles, highlighting the therapeutic relationship as a guiding axis of the clinical process and the therapist’s stance as a fundamental tool. Furthermore, they emphasized the importance of practical training, continuous supervision, and participation in experiential workshops as pathways for consolidating clinical competence. Approximately 74% had already undergone supervision in ACT, and 80% considered themselves therapists of this approach. The findings reinforce the relevance of investing in training grounded in experiential learning of ACT processes, while also pointing to the need for greater systematization of clinical competence assessment in Brazil. This study contributes to understanding the professional development of ACT therapists in the national context, revealing gaps and potentialities for future research and practice improvement.
