Abstract

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a psychological approach rooted in behavioral science with a focus on context, aiming to guide clients toward a life characterized by openness and values-driven actions tailored to individual values. The literature provides extensive evidence on the effectiveness of this prominent approach, which is recommended by both the World Health Organization and the American Psychological Association for a range of mental health issues. This study, therefore, sought to investigate and understand the necessary and existing recommendations that guide the desirable behavior of ACT therapists through a systematic review of the available literature. Nine articles were identified that emphasize the importance of the therapeutic relationship as a mechanism for change, the relevance of education involving ACT training, and the practice-specific aspects regarding therapists’ competence and adherence. This study contributes insights into perceptions and experiences regarding the attributes necessary and expected for effective ACT practice.
